Wrist & Hand Scan

Private Ultrasound Scan

Advanced Ultrasound Assessment of the Wrist Joint and Hand

From £120

At Sonoscan Healthcare, we provide professional and accurate wrist and hand ultrasound scans in Stockport and Manchester, helping to assess pain, swelling, or injury affecting the wrist joint, the hand, or both together — including bilateral scans for patients being investigated or monitored for inflammatory joint conditions.

This non-invasive ultrasound scan plays an important role in identifying tendon damage, joint effusion (fluid on the joint), nerve compression, ganglion cysts, or early signs of inflammatory arthritis that may be causing your symptoms.

What Is a Wrist & Hand Ultrasound Scan?

A wrist and hand ultrasound is a diagnostic scan that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves of the wrist and hand. It is painless, involves no radiation, and is particularly effective at picking up soft tissue changes and early joint inflammation that can be difficult to see on an X-ray.

We offer this scan in four ways, so you only book what your symptoms or referral require:
Option 1

Wrist Joint Scan

Focuses on the wrist joint itself. Commonly used to investigate:

  • Wrist pain, swelling, or stiffness
  • Suspected ganglion cysts
  • Tendon problems, such as De Quervain's tenosynovitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve compressions
  • Joint effusion following injury or overuse
Option 2

Hand Scan

Focuses on the structures of the hand, away from the wrist joint. Commonly used to investigate:

  • Finger or thumb joint pain and swelling
  • Trigger finger and other tendon problems
  • Lumps, bumps, or soft tissue masses in the hand
  • Suspected nerve entrapment in the fingers
  • Localised swelling not linked to the wrist
Option 3

Wrist Joint & Hand Scan (Combined)

Covers both the wrist joint and the hand in a single appointment. This is often recommended when:

  • Symptoms span across the wrist and into the hand or fingers
  • You have widespread swelling, stiffness, or discomfort across the whole hand and wrist
  • Your GP or specialist wants a fuller picture of the area in one visit
Option 4 · Rheumatology

Bilateral Wrist & Hand Scan (Rheumatology)

A more detailed scan examining both wrists and both hands, commonly requested by rheumatologists or GPs when investigating or monitoring inflammatory joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis. This scan looks for:

  • Synovitis (inflammation of the joint lining)
  • Joint erosion or early structural joint changes
  • Tenosynovitis (inflammation around the tendons)
  • Symmetrical patterns of joint swelling typical of inflammatory arthritis
  • Disease activity, to help guide diagnosis or monitor treatment response

Why Might You Need a Wrist or Hand Scan?

Your GP or specialist may recommend a scan of the wrist, hand, or both if you:

  • Have persistent wrist, hand, or finger pain, swelling, or stiffness
  • Have numbness, tingling, or weakness suggestive of nerve compression
  • Notice a lump or soft tissue swelling on the wrist or hand
  • Have had a sprain, strain, or fall affecting the wrist or hand
  • Are being investigated for, or already living with, an inflammatory joint condition
  • Need joint or tendon inflammation monitored over time as part of ongoing rheumatology care
